這三人中，林肯與甘迺迪都當過總統。雖然馬丁路德金恩不曾擔任總統，但這三人的共通點是 - 都是造成社會劇烈變動、人權長足進步的偉大人物，而且都是被暗殺死的。林肯解放了黑奴，而馬丁路德金恩則是二十世紀最受到傳頌與與紀念的黑人人權運動領袖。而甘迺迪則因為是自由主義的代表，所以任內對黑人權的改善，也有一定貢獻。
多講一下 JFK：甘迺迪任內不管在人權、內政、社會階級的變動也好，或者是國際關係的處理上，都有值得一提的地方，甘迺迪任內恰好處於冷戰時期的巔峰，如柏林圍牆的建造 (1961)、古巴飛彈危機 (1962) 等等，尤其是後者，「古巴飛彈危機」被認為是人類歷史上最可能引發第三次世界大戰的一件軍事外交事件，這個事件肇因於蘇聯在古巴部署了對準美國的飛彈，而甘迺迪政府對這件事的處理至今仍被認為是非常有智慧的。而且也許因為他悲劇性的死亡 (1963 年在德州達拉斯遇刺)，所以他一直被多數美國民眾視為歷史上最偉大的總統之一。
不過，直接導致音樂創作人 Dick Holler 在 1968 年寫下 "Abraham, Martin and John" 這首歌的直接導火線是 馬丁路德金恩 與 甘迺迪之弟 Robert F. Kennedy 雙雙在 1968 年遇刺身亡，曾任參議員的 Robert F. Kennedy 也是活躍的人權運動份子。
